Lake Bogoria at a glance
Lake Bogoria lies in the Rift Valley north of Nakuru. It belongs to the same UNESCO Kenya Lake System as Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita. Geothermal activity, with hot springs and geysers, is part of the official description of the lake. Which springs you can actually see on your day varies, so do not plan around one particular geyser.
The reserve is run by the County Government of Baringo, which collects the income from entry, camping, landings and filming. That matters for your budget: the KWS rates for national parks do not apply here. If you are building a route around Nakuru, compare it with Lake Nakuru tours from Nairobi first, because Bogoria is a separate trip with its own gate and its own fee.

Lake Bogoria hot springs and changing water levels
Rising water has changed the lake. The Kenya Wildlife Service estimates that Bogoria's surface is about 28 percent larger than the 1984 to 2009 average. More water can flood the lakeshore road and cover springs. Not every hot spring is a stop you can reach today, and older photos may show ground that is now under water. Ask locally which areas are open before you set off.
Treat the springs as something to look at from the ground you are shown. They are very hot and not for bathing, so do not touch or enter the water.
The drive from Nakuru takes roughly 2 hours. The exact time depends on where you start and on the state of the road near the water, so allow extra time and plan to be back well before dark.
Weather matters too. The rainy seasons in the Nakuru area run from March to May and again from October to December, and rain and water levels both change the shore. Our page on weather and travel planning explains the seasons.
UNESCO treats Nakuru, Bogoria and Elementaita together as one serial site of 32,034 ha. Those figures describe protected-area boundaries, not the water surface you will see today.

Lake Bogoria entry fees in 2026
Amounts per person, as of 2026. The county sets them, so confirm at the gate.
| Visitor | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|
| Non-resident | $50 | $20 |
| Kenyan citizen | KES 400 to 500 | about KES 215 |
| Children under 3 | โ | free |
The ticket is valid for 24 hours. Adult citizens pay between KES 400 and 500, so expect that range. Resident rates, vehicle fees, camping fees, gate hours and payment methods can differ from what is shown here, so ask your driver or the reserve before you leave. For most visitors, the practical plan is to confirm the amount for your category on arrival.
Lake Bogoria flamingos
Flamingos are a reason to come, but no lake in the region is a sure bet. Counts move between Nakuru, Bogoria, Elementaita and other lakes within weeks. Flamingos have moved to other lakes as conditions changed, so do not assume that the birds have simply shifted from Nakuru to Bogoria.
Go for the lake, the landscape and the springs, and treat flamingos as a bonus. Our flamingo page explains the changing water levels and what they mean for sightings.
